Getting Messy

Yesterday we had an attempt at reducing the amount of tv the girls watch. LittleSquishy has taken to crying, wailing and generally performing if she can’t have the tv on demand.

So in an attempt to distract her, we popped to the shop for some squirty cream, and then got ready for the mother of all messes.

Messy aprons – check. Squirty cream – check.

“So what do we do now?”

“Ohhh… it’s squishy!”

I’ve done this before with other kids using shaving foam, and the drawback to squirty cream is that it starts to melt when they get their hot little hands in it.

This is why I went for the cream over the shaving foam.

And the cleanup operation which put so much mucky water on the floor I finally had to just kick them out so I could clean it up properly. It’s one way to ensure the floor gets mopped though.

Balance

Apologies for the lack of posts last week. I’m struggling to find balance in my life right now, and the photography and blogging have taken a back seat. I’m also trying to spend less time in front of the computer when my kids are around, and by the time I get them into bed I’m too knackered to get online.

So I’ve decided to try and post three times a week, instead of daily. Also forgive the lack of comments on the blogs I follow. There are now over 200 unread items in my google reader! I’ve got you all bookmarked, and will get to you soon, promise.

Today’s photo is from a play session we had last week, inspired by both Mad Mum and Frugal Family Fun. I’m trying to be less worried about all the mess, and go with the flow. I got some rolled oats, left-over lentils and split peas which were well past their best and we had a mini-indoor sandpit. Well, large tubs really. The girls had a fab time, and managed to get it all over the kitchen floor. So then we had a fun time with broom, dustpan and brush, mini-hoover and hoover cleaning it all up again. They enjoyed this so much, we did it again the next day, and I’ve still got some mix left in the tubs for another rainy day!

I really like the light in this one. LittleSquishy had her back to the sun and it was streaming through the windows.

I’ve just been to collect a poorly LittleMoo from playgroup, and am generally un-organised at the moment, so here is a shot from the archives. This was taken on Christmas Day 2007 – and I’ve just realised it was the first day with my camera! I had taken this shot of LittleSquishy, but cropped off her chin (I know now why you shouldn’t do that – looks stoopid). So in processing it, I went for a really tight crop, and then played about with the colours, ending up with black and white.

Not Naughty

Yesterday had the potential to be one of Those Days. OtherHalf was away overnight for work. I’m *ahem* hormonal (sorry if that’s TMI). No playgroup. Gymnastics for LittleMoo and LittleSquishy would have to come too because Daddy’s not at home to supervise nap.

So I booked them into the nursery for the morning to give me some sanity time. I should have spent it working. But I ended up doing some retail therapy (brought some wool to knit a hat and some socks for OtherHalf), and missing the sprogs.

When I went to collect the girls to take them to gymnastics, I was strapping LittleSquishy into her carseat and she looked at me and said: “I be very not naughty for you today Mummy.” Aww, bless. And I hadn’t even talked to her about being good. She has been a little monster lately, having tantrums if you looked at her wrong, but yesterday I didn’t mention her behaviour. And she was fairly not-naughty for me. Even though she was pretty exhausted by the time we got home:

We had to get up on Sunday morning to take the girls to their ballet show dress rehearsal. This spoiled our usual Sunday plan, which is to stay in bed and/or pyjamas for as long as possible. The good side was we had to drop the girls off, and amuse ourselves for an hour and a half, before collecting them again. So we decided to pop to the shops for a look round. This is something of a minor miracle, as my OtherHalf Does Not Like Shopping.

Anyhoo… the result was some shiny new shoes!

Cupcake

We had friends round for lunch on Friday, and one of the mummies made some cupcakes for the kids to decorate. There was icing and sprinkes everywhere, but everyone had a lovely time. This is little Miss Crayons (daughter of Mrs Crayons) and her cupcakes were, by far, the best decorated of the day.

Oh, and I’m going to try and remember to take some shots of the bridge so you can see it in its triangular glory. The light is a bit dull at the moment, and there’s a little row of shops squashed right up beside it, so don’t expect anything too grand!

Bridge

We have a rather unique bridge in our village, in that it’s a triangular bridge. It used to span the point where two rivers merged, but I have no idea what happened to the rivers, as there’s just pavement underneath it now. My girls love to go over it, and last time it snowed, I went over with LittleMoo, at her urging. We got to the top fine, but then slipped over on the way down, so we decided it was easier just to slide all the way to the bottom on our tushies. This picture is of the side with stairs, while the other two have slopes, which I can attest get very slippery when icy.

OK, so these would be more snowish if we’d had more snow. We do seem to be the only place in the country apart from London to not measure the recent snowfall in feet, or even inches. But it was still pretty. This is a barn I photgraphed back in the summer (click here). Looks quite different, and a bit folorn, with the snow covering.

The Lake

This is another shot from my day of snowy shooting. There is a body of water near us which is optimistically called “The Lake” by locals. It was completely frozen over in the cold snap, and covered with a layer of snow. I did see a couple of dedicated fishermen who normally fish in the lake dropping their lines over the bridge into the river instead. It was -4°C. Now that’s dedication.
