Day 2: Jet lag, Mount Maunganui, feeling lost

Tuesday 20 September

Jet lag had us all awake at around 1:30 am this morning. After a few hours, we all managed to get back to sleep, but were a bit tired and spacey all day.

The weather is grey, cold and drizzly. It’s very misty, which is ruining the view from the balcony.

We headed over to the Mount for a morning walk, in an attempt to wake up. The Mount is at the end of the peninsula, so most of the walk is along the coast. The sea was crashing against the rocks along the bottom of the path, it was all very dramatic.

The girls enjoyed scrambling up along the side of the hill beside the path. Once we got about half way round, they started to flag, and there was a little bit of hangry grumbling, which was staved off by the promise of hot choc when we got back round to the shops.

The walk takes normally around 40 minutes, but may have taken just a little bit longer for us today. We stopped for hot chocolate, as promised, and I collected my first loyalty card (buy 10, get one free – I’m sure I can manage to get a freebie soon).

On the way home, we popped into a supermarket to stock up on some essentials, including the ingredients for Aunty T’s famous five-spice pork. I had a wobble as I walked around the shop, and didn’t recognise any of the brands. Everything looked so different, and the prices were difficult to understand. All of a sudden, I wondered what on earth we were doing, and desperately wanted to go home.

Then we found the pineapple lumps, so things didn’t seem so bad anymore.

After dinner (the aforementioned pork, which went down well), it was a very early night for us all, in the hope of a good night’s sleep.

We weren’t that lucky.
